Part of a double page I came across on 13 August in a Dutch newspaper, NRC Next, notorious for its use of photography. Out of the abundant macho performances of Putin they made an ‘Old Maid’, the Americans call it, the British call it ‘Happy families’, the Dutch ‘Kwartetspel’. Just glue the pages on carton and cut the cards out.

Weegee took a lot of promotional pictures of himself, like the famous one where he is typing captions in the trunk of his car. He did not take this very promotional picture himself though.

During my 1988 trip through the Netherlands in I drove a Citroën Van. I would take photo’s with a 5x4 from the roof and live inside. Pictures and diary entries were published every week in newspaper Trouw.

The Daguerreotype was unique, but it was small, it was laborious and it was poisonous. The Polaroid was unique, it was quick and easy, but it was poisonous too. And small, except in very special cases a big camera could be rented. That was expensive, you needed an assistant from Polaroid.

It all began with Weina’s beautiful column on PhotoQ. Webmaster Edie Peters and I started to dream about an English subsite of PhotoQ. More international in spirit and in approach. Based upon what we Dutch are good at: seeing things for what they are. Nescio, Saenredam, Olie, de Putter, Dijkstra.

Ik heb een vriend, hij heet Axel Funke. Hij woont aan de rand van de duinen, er gaat geen dag voorbij of hij is er. De kilometers die hij in de duinen aflegt, zet hij af op een wereldkaart.

Marie en Pierre Curie, heb ik altijd gedacht. Ontroerend onbeholpen proberen ze hun handen buiten beeld te houden, misvormd als ze zijn door het werken met radium.
