Getty-fotograaf Benjamin Lowy heeft een heuse primeur: deze maand komt Hipstamatic – de app die van foto’s polraoid-achtige afbeeldingen maakt – met een speciaal naar zijn voorkeuren ontwikkeld filter: de Ben Lowy Lens. Het nieuws is door verschillende bloggers met gemengde gevoelens ontvangen.
Op het fotoblog Lens van de New York Times legt Lowy, vorige week nog bekroond met de ICP Infinity Award voor fotojournalistiek, uit waar zijn hartstocht voor bewerkte mobiele-telefoonfoto’s vandaan komt: ‘Ik denk dat als je een andere esthetiek weet te scheppen dan mensen gewend zijn te zien, dan trek je de aandacht van het publiek, en kun je de inhoud van je verhaal tot ze laten doordringen.’
Fotograaf/schrijver Jon Anderson schrijft in een reactie, waarin hij de hedendaagse problemen in de footjournalistiek analyseert, onder meer: ‘Rather than style, I would emphasize the need for "vision," which is a very different thing and not entirely visual. A photographer with vision may not have a radically "peculiar" style, but there will be plenty of force and meaning and weight because the images are grounded in an original point of view, a narrative that is more than just a neat way to tell a story, because the themes provide a more substantial way of thinking about the world and any particular issue.’
Waarop Jörg Colberg doorgaat: ‘The problem here is that using a Hipstamatic/Instagram app is not at all “a different aesthetic than people are used to seeing” – everybody and their grandmother are now using those apps or filters. On top of that, these apps mimic old film cameras. So it’s not a different aesthetic at all – it’s a trendy aesthetic. In fact it’s so trendy and popular that Facebook just paid $1b to buy Instagram – a site centering on those kinds of images!’
