World Press Photo is now accepting entries for the 2012 contest for the best multimedia storytelling in visual journalism. Organized for the second time, this year’s contest is open for photographers, publications and multimedia producers to enter their work to be judged by an international, nine-member jury of experts.
The 2012 Multimedia Contest jury is chaired by director Vincent Laforet, France/USA, with Alan Stoga, USA, president of Zemi Communications, as secretary of the jury. The names of the full judging panel of nine will be announced later.
Looking to the judging, Laforet said: "As a former staff photojournalist for The New York Times and a World Press Photo winner, I am honored to chair the second Multimedia Contest. I have always held the World Press Photo competition in the highest regard throughout my professional career, which has recently evolved into filmmaking. I am excited to see some of the strongest multimedia content being produced from around the globe as media outlets have been pushing the creative envelope in search of new ways to engage their audience in dynamic ways. I am looking forward to seeing how individuals and organizations are marrying traditional storytelling techniques with cutting edge technology and delivery methods."
The judges will convene in Amsterdam at the beginning of March and the winners will be announced online on 15 March 2012.
Photographers, publications and multimedia producers can enter their multimedia productions on our web entry site (see link below). The deadline for registration and uploading submissions is 25 January 2012, 23.59 CET. Participants who have already registered for the Photo Contest also need to register separately if they wish to enter work in the Multimedia Contest.
The World Press Photo multimedia contest accepts online or offline linear productions with a journalistic storyline. Each multimedia entry must include professional still photography in combination with (but not limited to) audio and visual elements such as video, animation, graphics, illustrations, sound and text. Productions entered into the contest may not be longer than 20 minutes. The productions must be completed or first published in 2011. The work will be judged on their impact as well as their production and content.
The entry rules and instructions on how to enter are now available on the contest website in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. Visit http://multimedia.worldpressphoto.org for more information.
There will be three productions awarded at the 2012 Multimedia Contest. Each winning team will be recognized with a Golden Eye Award and a certificate. In addition, the team awarded the first prize will receive a cash prize of €5,000. A representative of each of the winning production teams will be invited to Amsterdam to attend the 2012 Awards Days weekend on 20 and 21 April and will receive the awards at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday 21 April.
