Het duo Broomberg and Chanarin is de winnaar van de Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2013, wereldwijd een van de belangrijkste prijzen in de fotografie. Ze winnen met hun publicatie War Primer 2, een boek waarin ze hedendaagse foto’s toevoegen aan Bertolt Brechts foto-essay Kriegsfibel (War Primer) uit 1955.
De prijs bestaat onder meer uit een geldbedrag van ruim 35 duizend euro. Naast Adam Broomberg (1970, Zuid-Afrika) en Oliver Chanarin (1971, Verenigd Koninkrijk) waren genomineerd: Mishka Henner, Chris Killip en Christina de Middel.

War Primer 2 is a limited edition book that physically inhabits the pages of Bertold Brecht’s remarkable 1955 publication War Primer. Brecht’s photo-essay comprises 85 images, photographic fragments or collected newspaper clippings, that were placed next to a four-line poem, called ‘photo-epigrams’. Broomberg and Chanarin layered Google search results for the poems over Brecht’s originals.
