World Press Photo stelt vanaf de komende jurering (begin volgend jaar) de multimedia-categoerieën open voor inzendingen. Vorige keer, tevens de eerste keer, werd de beoordeling in deze categorieën nog gedaan op basis van nominaties door deskundigen.

2012 Contest update: Photo Contest specialist category chairs announced; Multimedia Contest will be open for entries
World Press Photo is proud to announce the jury chairs for the specialized categories in the 2012 Photo Contest: Steve Pyke (Portraits), Joel Sartore (Nature) and Koji Aoki (Sports). David Friend will chair the overall final jury, as well as the first round of the News and Documentary category. Following the Photo Contest in February, the second Multimedia Contest will be judged in March, and will be open for entries by participants themselves.
2012 Photo Contest
As in previous years, the first rounds in three themed categories will be judged by specialists. Photographer and artist Steve Pyke, UK, is chairing the portrait category and Joel Sartore, USA, contributing photographer of National Geographic magazine, takes on the role of chair of the Nature category. The chair of the Sports category is Koji Aoki, Japan, chief photographer Aflo Sport / Aflo Dite and president Aflo Co., Ltd. As announced before, the news and documentary jury, as well as the final rounds of the judging, will be chaired by David Friend, Vanity Fair’s editor of creative development. The complete list of judges will be published at the beginning of December. Judging takes place at the World Press Photo office in Amsterdam from 28 January until 9 February 2012. The 2012 Photo Contest will be open for participants to enter their work online from 1 December. The deadline for submissions is 12 January 2012. The results of the contest will be announced on 10 February in a press conference at the Amsterdam City Hall and on the foundation’s website.
Now in its 55th year, World Press Photo is the leading international contest for professional photojournalists. In 2011, a record number of 108,059 images was entered by 5,691 photographers, representing 125 different nationalities.
2012 Multimedia Contest
In 2011, World Press Photo organized its first annual contest for the best multimedia storytelling in visual journalism. The first contest was set up as a pilot project, where entries were nominated by an international committee of experts, but the second edition in 2012 will be open for contestants to enter their work themselves.
There will be three prizes for online or offline linear productions with a journalistic storyline. Productions must include professional still photography in combination with (but not limited to) audio and visual elements as video, animation, graphics, illustrations, sound and text. The work will be judged on their impact as well as their production and content.
Entries for the Multimedia Contest will be accepted from 8 December, and the deadline is 19 January 2012. Details how to enter will be available later. The judges will convene in Amsterdam at the beginning of March and the winners will be announced online on 15 March 2012.
